How lottery pool winnings are split and taxed
Example: if 10 people split the $562M Powerball jackpot and take the cash value, each share is $23M before tax. Federal tax on a share that size is about $8.5M (37%), leaving $14.6M in a state with no lottery tax such as Florida, or $13.6M in Ohio (4% state tax). Taking the annuity instead, each person's first yearly payment would be about $543,118 after tax in Ohio.
How much does each person get if a lottery pool wins?
Divide the prize by the number of shares in the pool, then take off tax. For a jackpot, most pools take the cash value (the lump sum), which is roughly half the advertised jackpot, so each person's share is the cash value divided by the shares. Federal tax and, in most states, state tax then come off each person's share.
How are lottery pool winnings taxed?
Each member pays tax on their own share, as long as the pool claims the prize as a group. The person who claims it fills in IRS Form 5754 with every member's name and share, and the lottery then issues each member their own Form W-2G. Without it, the person who claims can be taxed on the whole prize, and handing out the other shares can count as gifts.
How much federal tax is withheld from a lottery pool prize?
The lottery withholds 24% of prizes over $5,000 for federal tax. A jackpot share is taxed at up to 37%, so most members owe more when they file their tax return; this calculator shows the full federal tax, not just what is withheld.
Can each member choose the lump sum or the annuity?
Usually not. The choice is made once for the whole ticket when it is claimed, so a pool should agree on it in advance, ideally in a written pool agreement.
How do we split the money if people paid different amounts?
By shares. Count each contribution as shares (for example, every $2 is one share), add them up, and each member gets their shares divided by the total. Enter the total shares and your shares in the calculator to see your cut.
Do pool members pay state tax where the ticket was bought or where they live?
Both can apply. The state where the ticket was bought can tax the prize, and each member's home state taxes their income but usually gives a credit for tax paid to the other state. The calculator uses one state's rate for everyone.
What should a lottery pool agreement include?
Who is in the pool and what each person pays per draw; who buys the tickets and how copies are shared before the draw; how winnings are split; what happens to small wins; lump sum or annuity; and who claims the prize. The free Pool Manager on this site tracks all of that and writes the agreement for you.
Estimates for planning, not tax advice: they assume the prize is each member's only income for the year and use 2026 federal tax brackets and each state's lottery tax rate. Local taxes (such as New York City's) are not included. A tax professional can tell you what you will actually owe.
